This blog post is being written in Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, captial of Tierra del Fuego, starting points for all brave enough to venture to Antarctica and my whereabouts for four days.
Flying into Ushuaia airport is already an experience, flying over the Beagle channel and touching down on the tarmac of the tiniest airport I have been to so far (at least for comercial aviation). It is cold here, but not as bad as I would have thought. Only winds from the South make me consider wearing long underpants again for the first time since I was five.
The city offers accomodation for every taste. I went for a central hostel, but you might as well stay in a luxurious "small hotels of the world" spa resort. You wouldn't guess that you are quite literally at the end of the world here. And even the end of the world needs a watering hole in form of an Irish pub...making you feel right at home again.
First I choose a cruise over a pint though and embarked the "Ana B" on a trip through the Beagle channel - named after the ship for Darwin's excursions. There is more on Tierra del Fuego to come tomorrow. For the time being, here are some first impressions in pictures.
